Borussia Dortmund has found a successor for Nuri Sahin, with Niko Kovac set to be announced as their new manager soon.
BVB are “on the home straight,” sporting director Sebastian Kehl confirmed in an interview with Marco Hagemann on DAZN immediately before their match against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.
Whilst the former captain did not name the new coach, stating only: “It will not be Ralf Rangnick,” German newspaper Bild this evening confirmed that the former Bayern Munich manager Kovac has signed a contract with BVB which will keep him at the club until 2026.
The 53-year-old is expected to arrive in Dortmund in the coming days and will be on the bench for the first time on February 8 for the Bundesliga match against VfB Stuttgart.
According to the report, which was also confirmed by former BVB player Kevin Grosskreutz on his podcast, Viertelstunde Fussball, Kovac will remain in charge at Dortmund until the end of the 25/26 season.
The Berlin-born coach led Eintracht Frankfurt to the 2018 DFB Pokal title but, despite achieving the triple of league title, domestic cup, and Super Cup, was sacked by Bayern Munich with one year remaining on his contract due to personal differences.
The former Croatia international takes over from Sahin who was forced out after BVB’s 2-1 defeat in the Champions League defeat in Bologna and four consecutive defeats.
Former Borussia Dortmund defender Robert Kovac, who has worked with brother Niko as his assistant in the last three positions, is expected to replace Lukasz Piszczek who departed with Sahin.
U19 coach and former Hearts striker Mike Tullberg will remain on the sidelines on Saturday against Heidenheim.
