Context

Spain dominated international football between 2008 and 2012, so as the World Cup in Brazil approached in 2014 they were one of the main favourites once again.

The Netherlands meanwhile had reached the final of the 2010 World Cup, losing to Spain in the final so the Dutch saw this match as a chance for a bit of revenge.

The Goal

As the match approaches half time and with the Spaniards seemingly in control, this incredible equaliser changes everything:

What Happened Next?

Four more goals were added by the Dutch in the second half as they secured a brilliant 5-1 victory over the holders Spain that will live long in the memory. Spain were eliminated in the group stage with a 2-0 defeat to Chile.

The Netherlands then beat Australia and Chile to top the group. They then grabbed a dramatic last minute win over Mexico, before edging out the tournament’s surprise package, Costa Rica, in the quarter finals.

They eventually lost to Argentina on penalties in the semis, but went on to record a comfortable victory over a stunned Brazil to claim third place.
