Stefano Sensi: The Future Of The Inter & Azzurri Midfield

By Daniel Lucci.

The new man in the middle. Internazionale’s new summer signing Stefano Sensi has made a flying start to the season and is finally getting the recognition he deserves.

Sensi has arguably been Inter’s best player in all six of his Serie A appearances this season. If this continues, it is safe to say he will be manning the Inter and the Italy midfield for many years to come.

Sensi has been impressive for the past few seasons in Serie A, but since the midfielder made the summer move to the San Siro from Sassuolo, he has been simply phenomenal.

Not only are Inter off to the perfect start, collecting six wins out of six matches, but their new young midfielder has impressed in each of their games.

Still only 24 years old, Sensi seems to be emerging as a dynamic midfielder under new head coach, Antonio Conte.

Conte is well known for pushing his players to the limit, and most of the time he gets the best out of the players at his disposal. This can be beneficial to Sensi and his growth as a player, but it is ultimately down to him.

He has the skill and talent — he has proven that — now he just needs to show everyone that he wants to continually get better each day. Thus far, he seems to be doing exactly that.

Not only has the Italian been sound in his defensive duties, he has already scored three goals and collected two assists in his five Serie A starts this season.

He has been directly involved in over 50% of Inter’s goals — more than any other Inter player. Not only are his numbers impressive, his vision and passing have been key in Inter’s linkup play which has been one of the highlights under Conte.

Italian International

Not only has Sensi impressed in Serie A, but his phenomenal play has not gone unnoticed by Italian national team boss Roberto Mancini.

Mancini called up Sensi for recent UEFA European Cup qualifying matches, in which he featured three times and scored one goal.

Much like at Inter, Sensi has impressed at international level, giving coach Mancini much to think about for the upcoming Euro qualifiers.

With the with likes of Marco Verratti, Jorginho, Lorenzo Pellegrini, and Sensi’s Inter teammate Nicolo Barella to call upon, it is arguably one of the strongest Italian midfields we have seen in recent years.

Since Mancini plays a 4-3-3, he can only start three of them. With Jorginho essentially a lock and Verratti also most likely a given, that leaves one position for the remaining three midfielders, all of whom have been impressive, but none more than Sensi.

Given his performances, it seems like he should be given the opportunity to be influential in this Azzurri midfield going forward.

Hopefully all this talent can produce good performances on the pitch for Italy and take them back to where they belong. To boot, the addition of coach Mancini should help develop and get this team playing good football. The squad will be hoping to finally qualify for the Euro Cup next summer and put the disaster of not qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup behind them.

World Class Potential

If Sensi is able to keep up these impressive displays there is no saying what his ceiling will be. With his prime footballing years still ahead of him, he could possibly become one of the world’s best in the middle of the park.

It is safe to say Sensi flew under the radar for the past few seasons, and no doubt he was under-rated at Sassuolo.

Now at Inter, football enthusiasts can see the talent and skill Sensi possesses. Leading the midfield by example and proving to everyone he belongs at one of the top clubs in Serie A.

Furthermore, taking Sassuolo’s rough start to the season into consideration, it is clear just how important Sensi was to that team and their midfield. Assuming Sensi can continue what he has been doing so far this season, he will be just as important to his new team as he was to his former team.

Now at a bigger team, playing in the UEFA Champions League, on the International stage, and under world class coaches, Sensi is finally getting the praise he very much deserves.

He is a very talented player and only getting better with increased confidence. It will be very exciting to watch Sensi grow into an even better and more complete player throughout this season.

Inter are still undefeated in Serie A this season and their new midfield sensation has been a key reason for this. Finally receiving the praise he deserves, the sky may be the limit for Stefano Sensi.
